Chapter 1 – Unfinished Business

Unfinished Business

Lena stepped out of the car, the familiar scent of pine and earth enveloping her like an old embrace. Her hometown hadn't changed much in eight years. The small, quaint buildings stood firmly against time, as if grounding themselves to the memory of her first love. Her breath hitched as she walked along Maple Avenue, her heart heavy with nostalgia. The leaves crunched softly underfoot, each step echoing through the hushed silence, reminding her of the first passionate kisses she'd shared with him under the old oak tree.

The project of capturing the town's beauty on film seemed bittersweet as memories surfaced uninvited. The old bookstore, the little ice-cream parlor, the very air seemed to be filled with whispers of long-ago laughter and tender touches she’d long tried to forget.

She had left to pursue her photography career, always intending to keep her heart firmly separate. But a part of her had remained in this small town, woven into the fabric of the streets, the houses, and the lives of its people. Now, catching up with her best friend, she learns that he, Alex, was never far from her thoughts.

“I told you Alex never stopped thinking of you.” Her friend said, stirring a memory of the shared passion between them, and Lena knew that her task was about to become far more complex. The romantic tension hung palpable between her and Alex. Waiting for a chance to explore everything they'd left unfinished.

Lena pushed open the heavy wooden door of The Rusty Bean café, the inviting aroma of freshly brewed coffee and sweet pastries greeting her. As she stepped inside, she felt a sudden, inexplicable pull, as if this café held secrets from another time. She looked around, taking in the vintage décor, and the familiar hum of conversation, the clinking of cups. Everything seemed to be frozen in the timeline of her youth but that wasn't what made her pause.

Ethan stood behind the counter, his back to her. His broad shoulders, the way he held himself with a quiet confidence. Then slowly, as if sensing her gaze, he turned, revealing a sharp jawline, and those mesmerizing blue eyes set against a familiar backdrop of chaos. Lena almost thought she had imagined it. Ethan’s face lit up, but his expression quickly turned into one of shock and confusion. Time seemed to stand still, as they stared at each other.

"Lena," he breathed, his voice a low, sudden shiver through the air, vibrating down Lena’s spine. The world seemed to fade away, leaving just the two of them, standing in a sea of unspoken emotions. His eyes roamed the length of her, then settled on her eyes, a thousand unspoken words passing between them. It was then that Lena knew she had some explaining to do.

Ethan's eyes flicked away, breaking the intense connection, but the tension between them remained, a palpable force that seemed to enforce an unmistakable gravity between them. The Coffee House patrons only served to add an awkward chorus of the mundane to the situation, each sip of coffee and conversation highlighting just how much had changed, and yet how much remained the same.

“How’ve you been, Ethan?” Lena asked. His eyes met hers fleetingly, but he quickly turned to the espresso machine, busying himself with preparing a drink.

“Good,” came the quiet response. There was a pause, enough for the quiet shuffle of the feet before he picked up his head and looked her directly, the warmth of his gaze searching hers. He’d never been one for walls, even in the best circumstances. He was quick to push past the things he couldn’t change, but this was too deep to just sweep under.

“You look good, Lena,” Ethan said. There was a shift in his voice, an echo of a time long since passed. The coffee machine hissed, and steam curled into the air, but neither of them moved, held in place by the weight of the memories that hung as thick as the fragrance of coffee. Lena tried to conceal the brief flash of remorse that washed over her. She wished she had a chance to explain.

The air was thick with unspoken words. The smells mingling in the café were as intoxicating as Ethan’s reaction to her. The space seemed to narrow, creating an intimacy that neither could break without causing a rupture in the air. Lena knew it was unfair, but it seemed Ethan was willing to play it that way. The best she could do was acknowledge it in the softest possible way. She gently smiled at him, her eyes taking in his face, memorizing the familiar lines and curves.

"Would you ever regret the decisions you made, Ethan?"

As quickly as she could ask, Ethan's face hardened, but there was a glint of uncertainty in his eyes. Maybe she shouldn’t. The warmth of the café couldn’t smooth over the possible condescension. Maybe he never wanted to.

Ethan's eyes flickered with a mix of old pain and new determination. "Regret is a luxury I can't afford, Lena. Not when I have something important to focus on." He turned back to the espresso machine, his hands moving with practiced ease as he finished the drink. Lena watched him, her heart aching with the knowledge that he'd moved on, he'd found his purpose, something that had the power to heal him from her mistakes. He slid the cup across the counter to a waiting customer, then turned back to Lena, his expression softening slightly.

"What brings you back to town, anyway?" he asked, leaning against the counter, his tone casual, but Lena could see the underlying tension in his shoulders.

Lena hesitated for just a moment, gathering her thoughts. "I'm here on a project," she began, her voice steady despite the turmoil within her. "I was commissioned to capture the town's beauty through my lens. I want to tell the story of this place, of our lives here through these photos. The old mill is at the top of the list, Ethan, it played such a significant part in our lives. But, I guess you know that."

Ethan's eyes widened in surprise. "You want to photograph the mill?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper. "It’s a part of our history, Lena, and it's being restored. It's something I’ve been working on for years. Well I'm heading up the research for it, anyway. But it'll be a massive project, way beyond what you think." He paused, his eyes searching hers. "What if... what if I helped you get a day to capture it? Aside from the mill, it's not just about this. I’m sure you remember and maybe you’ve forgotten, the town has a lot to offer."

Lena’s eyes widened. "You’d do that for me?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. The way he was looking at her, with a mix of tenderness and a hint of something she couldn’t quite decipher, piqued an old flame within her. The idea of him helping her, of them spending time together, of the possibility of rekindling their bond sent a shiver of anticipation down her spine.

"You owe me a ride, right?"

Lena's lips curved into a soft smile, her heart fluttering in her chest. "Okay, Ethan. But there are some things you need to know before we do this."

The café seemed to disappear around them once more, the world falling away to leave a delicate space just for the two of them. Ethan nodded, not wanting to break the spell. "I’m listening, Lena, and I promise to give you the best shot."
