Scarred: A Haunting Love in the Highlands
Chapter 1 – The First Rule is Broken
The First Rule is Broken
Isla's tires crunched over the frozen gravel as she pulled up to the looming edifice of Strathmore House. The slate-gray façade seemed to absorb the pale winter light, exuding an aura of secrets and shadows.
Grabbing her luggage, Isla tromped through the knee-deep snow towards the porticoed entrance. Before she could reach for the heavy iron knocker, the door swung open with a creak.
Isla found herself face-to-face with a man whose rugged features were bisected by a jagged scar that twisted his mouth into a permanent sneer. He loomed over her, broad shoulders filling the doorway, dark eyes glinting with a mix of curiosity and suspicion.
"You must be Miss Grant," he rumbled, his Scots brogue thick and heavy. "I'm Callum Strathmore. You're early—"
Isla cut him off, her voice sharp. "I arrived as soon as I could. The sooner I start, the sooner I can get out of this godforsaken place."
Callum's eyes narrowed. "Careful now, lass. You're not going to charm your way into my good books with an attitude like that." He stepped aside to let her pass. "Welcome to Strathmore House. I trust you'll find it...enlightening."
As Isla brushed past him into the cavernous foyer, a chill prickled her skin that had nothing to do with the bitter cold outside. Callum loomed behind her, his presence both captivating and unsettling.
"One rule," he said, his breath hot on her neck. "Never, under any circumstances, enter the east wing. It's off-limits."
Isla turned to face him, her chin raised in defiance. "And what happens if I do, Mr. Strathmore? Send me packing?"
Callum's lips curled into a twisted smile. "Oh no, Miss Grant. If you cross that line, I'll show you a darkness that'll make your blood run cold." His eyes raked over her, predatory. "And I think we both know you're curious enough to be tempted."
That night, long after the house had gone silent, Isla lay awake listening to the wind scream down the chimneys. Somewhere to the east, a floorboard creaked. She slipped from her bed, lit a candle, and padded barefoot down the corridor toward the forbidden wing, its heavy door standing a crack ajar.
Isla pushed the heavy door wider with her shoulder, the candle flame flickering against the darkness as she stepped into the east wing. Dust clung to the air, thick with the scent of neglect and secrets. Faint outlines of furniture loomed beneath white sheets, and along one wall hung paintings shrouded in the same fabric, their edges curling like forgotten whispers. She moved deeper, her bare feet silent on the cold floorboards, until she reached a locked bedroom door, its iron handle refusing to turn.
A hand clamped over her wrist from behind. Callum spun her around, his scarred face twisted in fury, eyes blazing with something far more dangerous than anger. He shoved her back against the wall, pinning both wrists above her head with one powerful grip. "I warned you, lass," he growled, his body pressing close, heat radiating through his shirt. "What the hell are you doing here?"
Isla's pulse raced, defiance and desire colliding in her veins. "I had to know," she breathed.
His free hand traced her throat. "Do you want me to stop?"
"No," she whispered, and surged forward to kiss him first, lips crashing hard, tongue demanding entry. Callum groaned into her mouth, releasing her wrists only to yank up her nightdress and tear aside her underthings. He freed himself with urgent fingers, then thrust into her in one rough stroke, filling her completely. She gasped at the stretch, the burn, the overwhelming possession. "Harder," she demanded, and he obliged, pounding her against the wall with brutal intensity, his hips snapping relentlessly. At her frantic nod, his palm clamped over her mouth, muffling her cries as he drove deeper. "That's it, take every inch like the curious little slut you are," he rasped against her ear. "So tight, so wet for me already—fuck, you'll ruin me."
She clenched around him, climax ripping through her as he followed with a muffled roar, spilling hot inside her.
For a long moment they stayed there, breathless, his forehead against hers, the candle guttering on the floor. "Tomorrow," Callum murmured, his voice rough as gravel, "you'll come to me in daylight, and we'll talk about my rules."
