Chapter 1 – The Null Effect: A Conversation Beyond Feelings

The Null Effect: A Conversation Beyond Feelings

Zoe steps into the party, and the room hits her like a wave. It's a sensation she's known since she was eleven, a constant hum of emotions that color her world. The excitement of the party washes over her, a warmth that spreads across her collarbone, while the low-level anxiety of a girl near the door presses behind her left ear like a persistent whisper. She can feel the general happiness of the crowd, three drinks in, settling over her like sunlight, a comfortable, familiar weight.

Navigating the party is second nature to her. She weaves through the crowd, her senses guiding her. She finds Dani, their mutual friend, amidst a cluster of people, and accepts a drink from her, the cool glass brushing against her fingers. She moves to the window, where the noise is slightly less intense, both in volume and in the emotional cacophony that never ceases to surround her.

After a while, she makes her way to the drinks table, the clinking of glasses and the murmur of conversations filling the air. As she reaches for a refill, she pauses. There's a silence beside her, a void in the constant sensory feed she's accustomed to. It's not an auditory silence—the room is still loud—but an absence of emotion, a blank space where she expects to feel something. She turns to look at the source of this unusual silence.

Standing next to her is Noah, tall and steady, pouring himself a drink with an ease that suggests he's comfortable anywhere. He notices her looking and meets her gaze, his eyes calm and unhurried. He says something ordinary, something about the drink selection, his tone dry and mild. She responds, but her words are automatic, her mind barely processing the conversation. She's too focused on the silence, on the absence of any emotional signal from him. It's unnerving, intriguing.

They stand at the drinks table, the party loud around them, the usual emotional noise absent between them. Zoe knows she should move away, but she doesn't. She can't. There's something about this silence, about Noah, that keeps her rooted in place. She wants to understand it, to fill the void with something tangible. She takes a sip of her drink, her eyes never leaving his, and wonders what it is about him that makes her feel so strangely calm, so strangely alive.

Zoe watches as Noah's lips curl into a faint smile, his fingers tightening slightly around the glass he holds. "Urban planner," he repeats, as if testing the words on his tongue. "It's not as exciting as it sounds. Mostly, I work with maps and spreadsheets, trying to make cities a little bit more livable."

She tilts her head, studying the way his eyebrows knit together when he explains, the way his hands move as he speaks. It's a dance of expression she's never had to pay much attention to before. "It sounds interesting," she says, and she means it. There's something captivating about the way he talks, the way his voice rumbles, steady and calm, like a slow river.

Noah raises an eyebrow, a small smirk playing on his lips. "Most people find it boring," he says, but his tone is light, teasing.

Zoe shrugs, her gaze drifting to his hands again. They're steady, strong, the kind of hands that know what they're doing. "I'm not most people," she says, her voice barely above the hum of the party.

As she looks up, she sees Dani approaching, a wide grin on her face. "Oh my god, you two!" she exclaims, her joy a bright, warm splash in Zoe's senses. "You're actually talking! I never thought I'd see the day."

Zoe feels Noah's gaze on her, watching her process Dani's words, watching her process the word that Dani lets slip so casually. "Affective null," Zoe repeats, the word tasting foreign on her tongue.

Noah's expression doesn't change, but there's a shift in his posture, a subtle tensing of his muscles. He's had this conversation before. He knows how it goes.

But Zoe doesn't retreat. Instead, she steps closer, her interest piqued. "What's it like?" she asks, her voice soft, her eyes searching his face. "Being... unreadable?"

Noah's gaze holds hers, and for a moment, she thinks he might not answer. But then, he surprises her. "It's like being in a room full of people, but all the voices are muted," he says, his voice quiet, honest. "You can see them talking, see their expressions, but you can't hear the words. You can't feel the emotion behind them. It's... isolating, in a way. But it's also freeing. I don't have to worry about projecting the right emotions, about being overwhelmed by other people's feelings. I just... am."

The party continues around them, the music thumping, the voices loud, but in the small space between them, it's quiet, peaceful. Zoe nods, understanding in her eyes. "That must be... different," she says, her voice barely audible over the din.

Noah's lips quirk up in a small smile. "It is," he says, his gaze never leaving hers. "But it's my normal. And it's not so bad, having you here. It's... nice."

And as the party rages on around them, Zoe finds herself leaning in, her heart pounding in her chest, her senses hyper-aware of the man standing before her. She wants to know more, to understand this silence, this void that somehow feels more real, more tangible than any emotion she's ever felt. She wants to touch it, to explore it, to fill it with something that's just theirs.
